High School Relationships

Relationships in high school can sometimes be challenging. Focusing on school while having a significant other can lead to many challenges, though when you have someone in your life, they can make you feel calmer despite going through difficult times.

Being in love is a wonderful thing, especially when you are in high school, but not everything is always rainbows and butterflies.

People want to feel important in each other’s life, but when their significant other has additional priorities, they can easily feel forgotten. Being a high school student involves after-school activities, jobs, and lots of homework. Being busy with all of these things could lead to the end of relationships, as there are simply not enough hours in the day to manage it all.

“When I was younger I found it hard to stay focused on school even more so when I was in a relationship,” says senior Andrew Castillo.

As if that is not enough, being a teenager is a rocky road of emotions. Students are going through a time when emotions are taking control rather than logic, and many people become so focused on their feelings that they get caught up in the troubles of being in love so young. Castillo shared his experience with this, “I found myself feeling depressed or stressed because of a relationship. I kept myself from feeling this way by keeping away from toxic people and focusing on myself more.”

Many parents keep their children from dating until they are a certain age, as they are worried about their kids losing focus of their future and getting too caught up in a love that is likely to only last a couple months. Senior Norberto Castillo describes her experience with this, saying, “My family definitely wants me to focus on school before getting involved in a relationship. School is very important to me and my family [and] a relationship can be very distracting… and they can cause you to lose focus on your future.”

While this is the case for many students, there are also some couples who dated throughout high school and managed to stay focused on school in order to graduate. There are many people who have had high school sweethearts and lived their happily ever after, though these stories can be very rare. Norberto shared, “Surprisingly, my two family friends Angela and Jasmine graduated with 20 extra credits and they both passed A-G, and to this day they are still together.”

This is just one of many examples of how love can flourish in high school, it all just depends on the people and the relationship. There can be many challenges that can get in the way of a high school romance, but if it is true love, there is nothing that can separate the relationship. Do not lose focus of your goals, but also remember that being in love when you are young is not impossible.
