5 Everyday Things That Are Bad For You

Michelle Padilla, Staff Reporter

When we wake up, we establish daily routines and we do not even know that some habits are bad. There are five key things that need to be altered in your life for a more productive day and better health.

Sleep Deficiency:

Teenagers need 9 hours of sleep, however, the average hours slept are 7. Sleep boosts maximum concentration, memory, and relaxes your mind. Hours of sleep are lost because of our phones in addition to other daily distractions.

“I am moody and tired,” Katelyn Lindstrom claims. “I do not complete classwork.”

Teenagers need sleep because they have classes the next day and can not focus if they are tired. Setting a phone curfew would get rid of a major distraction.

Excessive Phone Usage:

Phones emit harmful electromagnetic radiation that heats our body tissue. Much exposure to these currents cause nerve and muscle stimulation and affect biological processes.

Moreover, phones distract us from reality. People become addicted to their devices, which raises impulse-control problems such as the necessity to check social media every time a notification pops up.

We are close to reaching a level where teenagers depend on devices to live! Switching real life for technology wastes energy and time. Put your phone on  “do not disturb”  to silence incoming distractions; what really matters is living now

Daily Coffee Drinking:

Coffee is delicious, but it is not healthy to drink it every day. A cup twice a week is perfect because it does not affect your health. Studies show that avid coffee drinkers experience a 211% increase in cortisol levels, which elevates stress and can boost acne and inflammation.

I am very bouncy afterward and too energetic,” Onna Alvarez says when asked about the effect of drinking coffee.

Excessive coffee could lead to insomnia, stomachache, anxiety, and an irregular heartbeat, among other side effects. It can also increase the risk of heart disease.

Skipping Breakfast:

Breakfast is the most important meal. It kick-starts your metabolism and helps burn calories throughout the day. Skipping breakfast unbalances our body’s rhythm.

“Eating a balanced breakfast helps to increase our energy, protein, and calcium.” Says dietician Sarah Elder to BBC News.

Breakfast recharges blood sugar and provides nutrients and vitamins. If you skip breakfast, stop skipping. If time is an issue, make the effort to follow a schedule or wake up earlier.

Not Enough Water:

Many people do not drink sufficient water. Approximately 60% of the human body is water, and if we do not give our body enough water, some symptoms are dehydration, cramps, headaches.

At least 2 liters of water per day are needed. Energy and brain function are majorly influenced by hydration status. Water is used to regulate temperature and maintain other bodily functions

In conclusion, it is important to get enough sleep. Breakfast should not be skipped, less coffee is ideal. Drink more water, and regulate your phone usage.
