This year we have had new security adjustments made to campus. With construction and remodeling, new security, and new policies, Rancho Cucamonga High School’s hope is to ensure a safe campus for its students.
The office has been redone as of January 2020, with bulletproof windows, a new buzzer system, stricter security, and even a lobbyguard system that uses state identification to allow people entry and check them in and out.
This new protocol is enforced in order to protect students and staff; monitoring who comes on and off our campus campus. Due to the new system, Rancho Cucamonga High School has much better control over who comes through the office, but not necessarily the school itself. Anyone who makes it through the office is able to walk through the gates any time before 8:30am, and checking identification does not always happen because a school of over three thousand poses challenges in regards to security.
Although we may not have to show identification to come onto campus, we have security monitoring all areas of the school at all times. Not only do we have security guards, we also have a deputy on campus.
Our campus security officers are a major component of the safety of this school and the way the school functions. In addition to keeping us safe, some security guards have made an impact on students also, in very short periods of time. One such individual is a new member of the security team on campus: Junior Fonua.
Nida Haseeb, a senior at Rancho Cucamonga High School who has been here for the last four years, spoke on this. “I feel [Fonua] actually cares about how we are doing before urging us to go to class,” she explained, “he interacts with the students.” This type of healthy communication makes a big difference in the environment of our school and the happiness of the students.
There is no way to fully prevent these issues without completely locking down the school. By adding in the new security measures, it deters others from coming and attempting to create issues at the school, and overall allows Rancho Cucamonga High School to better know those who are coming into its campus. We have increased security on campus, on transportation such as bikes or golf carts in order to quickly get around. With them constantly patrolling, it is difficult to come onto campus without being seen by someone, even if you are physically able to make it in.
Although it is new and it’s effectiveness is still up for debate, it is definitely a step in the right direction in providing a safe environment for our students at Rancho Cucamonga High School.
