Homework V. Relationships

Jessica Roberts, Staff Reporter

Many high school students in romantic relationships tend to perform poorly in classes, these students have trouble finishing their assignments because of the pressures that result from their relationships.

Students in love put their significant other’s needs before their classwork, the distraction of relationships in high school encourages students to focus on short term interests rather than individual long term goals like college.

Now, you must be even more terrified to talk to your crush. Not all relationships can negatively affect your school work, it’s important to choose a partner who has your best interests at heart, someone who encourages you to better yourself. If you are dating somebody who pressures you with bad habits such as; ditching important events, not studying for assessments, and missing crucial deadlines, you should reflect on how that relationship is affecting not only your day to day life, but your future.

Why can some students handle relationships both others cannot?

Bluntly put, having the mindset that your relationship might be temporary could be the answer.  That is where most students make the wrong choice, making major life decisions around their significant other of about two months thinking they are going to last forever, the consequences of your actions throughout high school will not cheat on you, ghost you, or suddenly break your heart. It follows you forever unlike so many high school relationships.

Senior Emilee Flores states “Relationships should be held off until later […] if you know [that] you personally cannot handle both, because you have priorities and school as a teenager should be your first priority.”

Flores acknowledges that she cannot handle both a relationship and school work at the same time, she talked about how she would show more of her attention to the person she was with instead of her work. She learned the hard way when she ended up failing a class due to poor decisions.

At our young age, put yourself first. Try to consider all your options and which of those options are most important for you and your future.

If you are really into someone and believe your relationship is worth it, try to balance out both work and your relationship. It’s crucial to not be blinded by love, it’s fun to feel loved by someone but no one else will live your future but yourself. If this article raises any flags for your relationship, talk to your significant other about how you feel!
